My workouts heavily depend on my mood, my energy level, and the time of day. Am I energized? Am I tired? Am I hungry? Is it morning? Is it night?
I personally have the best workouts in the morning, about an hour after I wake up. I wake up, wash up, drink water, have a cup of tea or coffee (only if I really need the energy), I have a high-carb breakfast (unless I am doing fasted cardio), and then I head straight to the gym.
I typically begin my workout with 10-15 minutes of cardio to warm up. Sometimes it is on the elliptical, sometimes the treadmill, and sometimes the stair master. Then, I will typically focus on one body part per workout session. I typically use lighter weight with more repetitions to lean out my muscles. Sometimes I like to trick my body by going slightly heavier with less repetitions, and then I wake up more sore the next day. I will only do this a few times per month. 2-3 days per week I will do cardio only. On these days, I will do 10 minutes on the treadmill, 15 minutes on the elliptical, and end it with 10 minutes on the stairs.
On the days I am lifting weights, I end with 10-15 minutes of more cardio. I usually end with the stair master with high intensity interval training. For example, I will do one minute on level 15, and do the next minute on 8. This will keep my heart rate up, and burn fat, exactly what we all want! If I feel I can handle a few extra minutes of cardio, and I am not satisfied by how much I've sweat throughout the workout, I will end with a few more minutes on the elliptical.
After I'm done, I leave the gym feeling happy, healthy, and ready for a shower! There is nothing more energizing and rewarding than leaving the gym after an amazing workout. After all, you've never heard someone say "Ugh, I wish I didn't work out that hard!"
